Staff Training: Communication Prompting

Easy, low-prep training session for staff or parents regarding the AAC/communication prompting hierarchy.

A SCILLS unit. SCILLS ((c) The Communication Classroom) stands for Social and Communication Independence during Learning and Life Skills. In order for our students to gain communicative independence across settings, consistency is key. This is your first step towards prompting consistency and staff buy-in.

Research shows that implementation of AAC and communication strategies increase when training is paired with coaching. Use this unit to start combining both!

Includes:

• An overview and how-to guide for SCILLS trainings
• A self assessment to be used before the training, and after to gauge effectiveness and learning
• 3 Lessons/Units - in PowerPoint format
  • Teaching Unit - what is the hierarchy, what does each step look like?
  • Practice Unit - role play as the student and have staff prompt you for communication
  • Review Unit - have staff correct the video models and then recap the hierarchy - have them teach you!
• Video models of good and bad prompting
• Discussion questions
