Description

SPY IN THE WILD

How well do you know your habitat? During this activity your students will participate in a hands-on observation/habitat challenge. You will notice an increase in the development of your students' observational skills as they participate. Then they will create and build a periscope to spy in the wild. You will be able to see around corners and over fences or hills.

We can learn about habitats similarly by recognizing what should and should not be there. A biologist can identify an invasive species in a habitat the same way!

The following spy activity has the students looking for an item that does not belong in the habitat it is placed.

When completing the activity, the students should discuss things they notice, like insects, plants, animals, sounds and smells, while looking for the missing item. They will get new clues to follow and find as the search goes on.

With alternate rainy day challenge included. Students will learn about

Smells

Humidity

Color

Any plants, animals, or insects living there?

How the area surrounding the item feels to the touch.

Differences in the temperature of the air surrounding the item and the temperature of the area it is placed.
