What educators are saying

Great activities to practice sequencing and retelling with my students with Autism. I liked the options of using the retelling mat or making a necklace.
I really liked the visual supports. These resources helped me to tell the story in an easier way for my students to understand and to keep them engaged during the reading.

Description

Learning to remember key details, sequencing and retelling stories are important aspects of learning how to read! These story retelling/sequencing activities will help your readers with sequencing the events in a story.

After making this craft...they can wear it home and retell the story to their families!

It's such a fun way to practice retelling and sequencing!

There are color and black and white options for this activity!

You can use this for a whole group or small group activity. If your students are more independent, it would make a fun literacy center activity!

*product update 10/2021 to include more sequencing and retelling activities!

This set includes:

  • Story necklace picture cards *10 in color and black and white
  • Story necklace text cards *10 in color and black and white
  • Larger story necklace and text cards
  • Story Mat in black and white
  • Story Mat in color
  • Picture Cards for your pocket chart for each of the events in the story
  • Text Cards for your pocket chart for each of the events in the story
  • Two pages of ideas for using the materials in your classroom!

Story Sequencing Necklace: *two sizes to pick from

1. Use just the picture cards and cut each circle out and them string them on a piece of yarn.

*you could have the students place numbers on the backs of each of the circles to help make stringing them easier....helps a lot with younger students so they don’t get them mixed up.

2. Use the picture circles and the text circles.

•Children will color the pictures and cut out the picture circles.

•Children will cut out the text circles.

•Children will glue the pictures with the correct text so they are back to back *children should be able to see the pictures on one side and the text on the other.

•Let them dry and then paper punch and string them in order.

*you can choose from color or bw opitons.

Story Picture and Text Cards:

  1. Use the large picture cards for a pocket chart sequencing or retelling activity. There are word cards that match each of the pictures, so you can do activities where children try to match the text to the correct picture event from the story.
  2. Another thing I like to do with the picture and text cards is put them in order on the pocket chart. Then, remove some of the event cards. Pass out the missing pieces and see if the students can find the correct place in the story for that card.
  3. If you are working with a small group, have children take turns reading each of the story text cards and place them in order on a pocket chart as each card is read. When you are done, pass out the picture cards and see if the students can find the matching text card for each of the pictures! They can place the picture card on top of the text card.

Story Mats: in color and bw

Some suggestions:

  1. I like to use the black and white copy for a coloring and retelling page.
  2. I like to use the color story mat with a video playing. Give each child a story mat and some pumpkin erasers or any objects that they can “cover” each event with on the mat. As they listen to the story/watch the movie, have them “cover” that event on the story mat!
  3. They are a great take home activity if you want your students to practice retelling! Just include a note to the parents explaining what you would like them to do!
