Description

Integrate pumpkin math and pumpkin writing with this engaging Pumpkin STEAM activity!

This STEAM activity works as a companion to the book Spookley The Square Pumpkin by Joe Toriano. Students learn about 3D shapes and build their very own unique pumpkin to make a class pumpkin patch!

Students color and design their own pumpkin using one of the included 5 pumpkin shape templates. For more of a challenge students can design their own shape template. Each student writes details about that shape, and then writes their own pumpkin story about their unique pumpkin!

This is the perfect Pumpkin Day activity!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure.
Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
