Description

This Special Education Fraction unit provides practice adding fractions with like denominators and adding fractions with, unlike denominators with scaffolded practice.

The book walks through the steps for adding fractions, including:

  • how to find the least common denominator
  • how to find the greatest common factor
  • how to simplify your final answer if needed (covers proper and improper fractions)

There are 2 power cards for students to use while working through the unit. One outlines the steps of adding fractions. One card shows how to simplify an improper fraction. There is also an example on each card for students to refer to.

There are 4 worksheet sets to help students work through the steps. The worksheets provide less and less support (fewer answers pre-filled in) as students go through them.

  • Set 1 (3 worksheets): students find the LCD
  • Set 2 (3 worksheets): students add numerators and evaluate the final answer (proper/improper, needs to be simplified or not)
  • Set 3 (7 worksheets): students simplify proper and improper fractions
  • Set 4 (10 worksheets): students go through all the steps of adding fractions

There are daily group activities using the vocabulary and fractions cards included in the unit.

Finally, there is a quiz to assess understanding at the end of the unit.

Much of what I have learned about curriculum development is incorporated into these units. For example, do not be afraid of repetition. It is critical that students with significant disabilities get to experience material over several days to be able to fully assimilate what is being taught. Also, adding visual supports to your printables and class activities helps students be able to pay more attention to the content you are presenting rather than the mechanics of what is expected. Finally, ask questions. Good questions!! Regardless of the material, if we can ask students good questions it will push them to think more deeply than before.

As always please take a moment to leave feedback or post any questions you may have. Remember, you will gain credit toward future purchases on tpt as you leave more and more feedback!!

I am currently developing more units, and any feedback I get helps me make improvements in the future.

★★★I have many other math units available (too many to list here). Just click on the math tab to the left in my store.
