Description

Art + Spanish connection! This Middle School or High School 3-D sculpture lesson opportunity provides a classroom-friendly, inexpensive & low mess method to create 3-dimensional Vejigantes-inspired masks!

  • This mask-making art project is perfect as a distance learning or classroom lesson for Art or Spanish classes!
  • Students can create these no-paste masks using a cereal box or cardstock!
  • This student-tested method is easy to implement in a Spanish classroom, home-school environment, or art room!
  • These masks can be decorated with any supplies students have on hand at home.
  • These masks could be decorated as African-style or Mardis Gras- style masks as well!
  • The step-by-step instruction handouts are easy to send to students as a PDF to create any kind of cultural mask!

⭐These masks will require about 2 ½ class sessions or increments to equal approximately 150 minutes.

  • I designed this lesson for our middle school Spanish teacher. She incorporated these fun masks into her Puerto Rico Unit.
  • This project has been student-tested with 180 8th graders in the classroom.
  • The mess was minimal. Most students seemed to really enjoy creating these masks! The process is straightforward and stress-free.
  • Both the teacher and the students found the project to be successful and satisfying! Storage was easy because the masks could be stacked on shelves or placed in boxes for each class period.
  • Many students wanted to be able to wear their masks! Adding a tie is possible with a hole punch and yarn or elastic if desired.
  • Our Spanish teacher simply wanted to display the masks on the cork strips outside her room.
  • We easily added a string to the back of the masks to make that possible.

If using this project in an art room, papier-mache paste definitely could be added The complexity of this project could go even further to make more realistic sculptures using wadded newspaper, cut cardboard or tagboard cones, beaks, and snouts to make masks that are more creatively "authentic”.
