Description

Need ideas for teaching syncopa, or ti-ta-ti (1 eighth/ 1 quarter/ 1 eighth)? This 91-page product includes lots of materials for teaching syncopation, including:

*Six folk songs for teaching syncopa, with notation and game/dance directions ("Bump up tomato," "Oboshinotentoten," "Sansa Kroma," "I've got to rise," Lost my gold ring," and "I got a letter this morning")

*Syncopa learning center directions

*"Be a composer" worksheet

*Syncopa memory match game (8 pairs/ 16 cards with directions)

*Rhythmic flashcards for syncopa: Each page comes with two flashcards, which can be printed onto cardstock, cut into two (on the solid line), and laminated for frequent use. The set comes with 10 rhythmic patterns; with most of the patterns being commonly found in folk songs. The patterns are first written with noteheads, and then in stick notation (without noteheads). The flashcards can be used for reading practice, composition, instrument playing, transitions, and more!

*Lesson plan for presenting syncopa (35 minutes long, aligned with NCCAS)

*Directions on how to do paper plate improvisation activity, accompanied by rubric

*Rhythm manipulatives, with directions on how to use

*Strategies to prepare and practice syncopa physically, visually, and aurally

*Musical Math Powerpoint (make sure to view in slideshow mode!)

*"Lost my gold ring" mini-slideshow, including lyrics, rhythm, ostinato, and geography

*"I got a letter" slideshow, including lyrics, rhythm for first phrase with preparatory notation and actual notation, and slides asking for how many sounds and how many beats both "short-long-short" and syncopa have

*Paper airplane PDF for reading syncopa, ti-tika, half note, tika-tika, ta, ti-ti, and quarter rest patterns using a koosh ball or squishy ball

*SMART Board File with rhythm manipulatives

*Musical Math Powerpoint

*Directions for making stop/go and beat/rhythm signs (used in presentation lesson)

*Syncopa pre- and post-test, with answer key

*Syncopa graphic organizer, with answer key

Download the preview for more information. To view the PDF's like powerpoints, go to "view," and then "full screen mode."

Prior Knowledge: It is assumed that the students know 1 eighth/ 2 sixteenth, half notes, sixteenth notes, eighth notes, quarter note, and quarter rest (ti-tika, two, tika-tika, ti-ti, ta, and rest) prior to this unit. Files can be used regardless of rhythm syllables your students use (for example, if your students say "ti-ta-ti," they can still use all of the files.)
