Your students will love practicing literary elements and grammar concepts through the use of song lyrics! Use these activities to build their skills with figurative language and grammar and sentence structure in a fun way.

Song Lyric Analysis for Figurative Language and Creative Writing:

- Analyzing a song for figurative language - can be used for any song
- Figurative language scavenger hunt (4 versions included for 1 song, 2 or 3 songs by the same artist, 2 songs by different artists, multiple songs/artists,)
- Identifying the Theme in songs - short activity with examples of themes; students identify themes for 3 given songs and then choose 2 songs to analyze.
- Analyzing metaphors in songs - students give their interpretation of 4 given metaphors found in songs and then identify two other metaphors from a song they choose and write their interpretation.
- Music and song lyrics bingo - variety of fun creative writing activities on the theme of songs and song lyrics. Students choose 5 activities in a row to complete for bingo.
- Short journal activity - students analyze a song and write a journal entry from the perspective of the artist.
- Song Analysis Doodle Sheet: Students analyze a song, and jot down notes for connections and literary elements. In a fun, doodle format so they can get creative and make it colorful! (printable only)

Song Lyric Analysis for Grammar and Sentence Structure
- Grammar Quick Reference Guide. This is a brief overview of some of the grammatical concepts they will encounter in the different tasks.
- Song Lyric Scavenger Hunt. Can be used with any song! Students search the lyrics of a song to find examples of different language concepts. An editable PowerPoint document is also included so that you can customize according to your students' needs or specific concepts you want to emphasize.
- 40 Task Cards with a variety of grammar and writing tasks. The following tasks are included: (1) identify parts of speech (2) edit grammar (3) complete missing words from lyrics (4) finish a lyric with their own ideas (5) rewrite a line from a song by using the same sentence structure from the original.
