Description

Let's turn our words and hands into being helpful, not hurtful. Whether it's in the classroom, playground or outside of school, kids can get hurt by the hands and words from other people. This lesson highlights the difference between helpful and hurtful hand and words. There are a variety of activities to keep students engaged and having fun, while learning about the value of helpful words and hands.

This product can be used solo, paired with a book that is about hands or words that are helpful or hurtful throughout the year. Here are some books to consider pairing the lesson with:

  • The Bad Seed, Jory John (a funny story about a “bad seed” recognizing it doesn’t have to be “bad” and turning it around)
  • Most People, Michael Leannah
  • Hands are Not for Hurting, Elizabeth Verdick
  • Words are Not for Hitting, Martine Agassi
  • What if Everyone Said That?, Ellen Javernick
  • Words and Your Heart, Kate Jane Neal

    • You Decide (small groups, partners, document camera)
    • Examples (18 scenarios)

  • Reflection Sheets (2 versions)

This lesson can be used in a variety of settings, based on your need.

  • Classroom Meetings
  • Small Groups
  • Individual Basis

I created this lesson, because I needed activities to correlate with Hands and Words are Not for Hurting week. Teachers from K-5 took the activities they wanted to use in class for the week, along with taking a pledge. We emphasize this message for a week, but teachers can use any of the activities throughout the year as reminders. I also have these activities ready to go in my office for the kiddos who need an extra boost in using hands and words in a helpful way.
