Sample SEL Choice Board Tasks:

• Draw a picture of yourself. Write at least 10 strengths all around the image. (Self-Awareness: strengths & challenges)
• Make a to-do list for your day or week. (Self-Management: planning ahead)
• Draw and color a stoplight. Write the words “Stop, Think, Choose”. (Self-Management: self-control)
• Choose any social rule or expectation. Design a poster explaining what the social rule is are and why it is important. (Social Awareness: social expectations)
• Create your own movie or book title for a story about a great friendship. (Relationships: friendship skills)
• Explain the quote: “Apologizing doesn’t mean you were wrong. Sometimes it means you value the relationship more than your ego.” (Relationships: making up for mistakes)
• Draw a scene from a movie or book where a character has to make a difficult decision. (Decision-Making: ethical decisions)

How Can I Use SEL Choice Boards?

The steps to using these SEL Choice boards are very easy! Just set your students up with binders, discuss one topic per week, and assign the choice board as you see fit.

1. Create Student Binders: Have each student put together a designated SEL Assignment Binder. Have students place this in the front of their binders. This is where they will keep all SEL choice board assignments, which helps keep students organized and allows them to look back on the past work.
2. Introduce Topics: It helps to introduce each new topic for the week. For example, week one should start with strengths and challenges. You can discuss the topic with your students, ask questions about the topic, provide real life examples, and ask for feedback. Use this time to provide background knowledge about the topic before handing out the choice board assignments.
3. Assign Tasks: You have complete flexibility in how to assign the activities to your learners. You may choose to assign all nine activities for students to complete throughout the week or have students select a certain number to finish. This also allows for modifications for all students. For example, you may want to assign all nine activities for some students, while assigning only three to others. It is entirely up to you and the needs of your students!
4. Review Student Work: Once a week (or as you see fit), take time to review student work with your group or class. Go through each activity and discuss it, giving time for students to share their responses. Giving students the opportunity to discuss their work allows extra time to integrate SEL into the day, provides time for additional discourse, and helps students learn from one another. This can be a fun end-of-the-week activity.
