Description

Activities range from hands-on labs, games, puzzles, assessments, and even a craftivity. I have used this unit with my kids and they LOVED it and so did my administration. Not only did it highly motivate my students but met state standards.

Unit covers the following objectives:
Learning Activity #1-
Students will familiarize themselves with the vocabulary associated with genetics and Punnett Squares.

Learning Activity #2-
Students will develop a working knowledge for the vocabulary words: trait, dominate, and recessive by illustrating an all dominate and an all recessive snowman.

Learning Activity #3-
Students will develop a working knowledge for the vocabulary words: genotype, phenotype, and alleles by analyzing traits with a chart.

Learning Activity #4-
Students will recognize that when one dominant allele is present in a genotype that the phenotype will take on the dominate characteristic.
Students will recognize that for the recessive phenotype to appear that the genotype will not contain a dominant allele.
Students will develop a working knowledge for the vocabulary words: heterozygous and homozygous by analyzing the genotypes for 7 traits to create snow “parents.”

Learning Activity #5-
Students will develop a working knowledge for the vocabulary word: Punnett Square by create squares using the traits of their individual snow “parents” genotypes.
Students will evaluate Punnett Squares for the probability and percent of chance for trait combinations.

Learning Activity #6-
Students will create 4-sided random number generators from paper plates.

Learning Activity #7-
Students will determine genotypes for 4 snow “babies” by using a random number generator.
Student will illustrate snow”babies” by using genotypes to analyze phenotype of the 7 traits.

Learning Activity #8-
Students will create a model of snow “baby” and create a list of genotypes of the 7 traits for their snow “baby”.

Learning Activity #9-
Students will be tested over genetic concepts.
