What educators are saying

Most of my students this year struggled with writing equations from a word problem. This product was SO helpful in scaffolding the process for them.

    Description

Simplify word problems and boost understanding with this bundle of classroom-tested resources. Each resource builds on the prior one to help your students develop a complete understanding that can be applied to more traditional word problems. Each step of the way, some scaffolding is removed to build independence.

Perfect for special education, math intervention, or any students who need a little more support before turning word problems into one-step equations!

    This bundle includes:

    • Equation Match: Introduce the concept of using equations to describe real-world situations. Using the same numbers and variables for each equation in a set forces students to think critically about the operations required to represent each story. Using a matching activity before writing equations from scratch allows students to get comfortable with equations representing stories before they have to write them on their own.
    • Build-an-Equation: Break down the process of writing equations into small, manageable parts with these step-by-step word problems and graphic organizers. Students will start by defining a variable, then determine which operation the story describes, and then complete the equation before solving.
    • Simplified Word Problems: Use this resource for additional practice with writing equations from word problems, with slightly less structure than the Build-an-Equation activity.
    • Quiz with Review: Review what students have learned about writing their own equations, and assess their understanding. Recommended use: Provide assistance to students during the review, checking answers frequently. Then, give the quiz as you normally would. You can give the quiz the same day as the review if your students are ready, or you can wait until the following day. You can also assign the review as a study guide for homework to be completed before the quiz.

I have used these resources in my self-contained math classroom for years, and they have made their way into gen ed classrooms as well.
