    Suggested Pacing:

    • Simile Lesson: Start with the Simile Lesson. Students will learn and practice writing similes using a favorite book character. After students become familiar with similes, on to the
    • Metaphor Lesson: They will be exposed to different ways of looking at everyday items and how they can be used to compare objects that are unalike through several creative methods.
    • Simile and Metaphor Sorting Game: Students can solidify their understanding of the two concepts, which are easily confused, by playing the Simile and Metaphor Sorting Game (which also includes an original passage for extra practice/assessment). Note: A digital Easel version of the cards with self-checking multiple-choice answers is also included.

As students deepen their understanding of these figurative language concepts, they will begin to notice how they are used in the literature and poetry they are reading. The end goal...they will start using them to enhance their own writing and bring it to the next level!
