Learning Objective

Students will read a sentence and determine whether it can be categorized as simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex.

Description

Are you looking for a fun game that your students can play as they practice identifying simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentences? This is a hands-on game that your students will love! They can play with a partner or in a small group. They will read a sentence and then determine whether it can be classified as:

→ Simple

→ Compound

→ Complex

→ Compound-Complex

Directions and answers are included. This game is designed to be played by no more than six people. To prepare the game, do the following:

  • Print a collection sheet for each student. Each collection sheet has four squares labeled with simple, compound, complex, and CC (compound-complex).
  • Print one set of playing cards for each group. If possible, print them on cardstock to provide added durability.
  • Cut apart the playing cards and place them facedown in the middle of the table.

Students take turns drawing a card and reading the sentence aloud. Then, they state which type of sentence structure was used to form the sentence: simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. When a student answers correctly, he or she gets to keep the card and place it on his or her collection sheet. The first person to cover their categories by collecting all four sentence structures wins! But be careful! If a student draws one of the two cards that say "OUCH", he or she must return ALL of his or her collected cards back into the pot, and start over. (There are also two "Lose a turn" cards.)

As a bonus, an instructional poster is included! It lists the components of each sentence structure and an example sentence. Use it to review the four sentence structures before playing the game. Or, you may choose to have it available for students to refer to as they play the game.

If you've never played this game in your classroom before, give it a try! It's super fun!

I encourage you to take a peek at the PREVIEW!! (Please note: this is not included in my Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences Bundle.)
