How can I use interactive notebooks in my second grade classroom?

There are many ways to use interactive notebooks to support learning. In my own classroom, I have used these pages as whole group note-taking, for small group instruction, as partner work, and as independent work. At times, I have used them as a class exit slip to check understanding or a math center activity to allow for practice and to add additional information to my students’ notes.

Students’ notebooks become a great reference tool they take ownership of and go back to throughout the year. Whenever we are reviewing a skill, you are sure to see notebooks out on desks or center tables.

As an added bonus, regular cutting and pasting strengthen fine motor skills!

    ---

Please note that these pages are intended for use in a standard size single subject notebook (8 1/2 x 11 sized pages). Most will be a bit too large to fit in a composition size notebook without adjustments to your printer settings.

Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
