    ABOUT THE DECODABLE READERS:

    This SOR curriculum includes 236 TRUE science of reading decodable readers. With these decodables, you will get:

    Easily differentiate! Each book has two versions included:

    • decodable books with pictures
    • decodable books without pictures.

    For the version without pictures, students will read the decodable reader and then sequence and glue the story pictures in.

    Fiction and Nonfiction: Every unit includes both fiction and nonfiction decodable readers. Nonfiction decodable books are included at the end to review skills.

    4 Formats: The decodables are offered in multiple options:

    1. Print and Staple: Print, staple, and cut in half
    2. Print and Fold: no cutting! Currently in units 1-3 and being added to all units.
    3. Decodable passages: one page with comprehension questions

    How are Science of Reading small groups different from traditional guided reading? These science of reading aligned units are meant to help you rethink and redefine what guided reading and phonics looks like in your classroom! Instead of using leveled readers and teaching guessing strategies, you will teach reading in a systematic way using decodable readers that build as students learn new phonics skills?

    Will these units be easy for a new teacher to use? YES! I wanted to make the transition to the Science of Reading as EASY as possible for you. Everything is ready to go for you and tells you exactly what to do step-by-step.

    How to get started with your Science of Reading Small Groups:

    1. Use the included placement assessment to group your students.
    2. Start each group in the unit they showed difficulty in - if a student stops the assessment at digraphs, they will most likely begin in Unit 4.
    3. Frequently assess students with notes, running records, and the included assessments. Groups should be fluid. Students may progress at different paces and that's okay!

    Can I use these science of reading decodable readers out of order? You can use the Pre-reader alphabet books out of order, but for the rest of the units it is not suggested to use the decodable readers or the decodable readers guided reading science of reading curriculum out of order.

    The books and units are designed to build off one another. Books increase in difficulty and skill as the units progress.

    Does this curriculum include lesson plans? Yes! Every book includes a lesson plan that has everything laid out for you.

    Do I have to use every part of the lesson plan? No, you can use what works best for your students and what you have time for.

    How long will a lesson take? It may vary depending on the time of year, but I would dedicate around 20 minutes to your lesson.

    Can I use the science of reading curriculum for whole group instruction? Yes, but it is not suggested. You will get the best results by using this curriculum in differentiated small groups.

    Do I have to use every book in these decodable readers guided reading units? No, I suggest assessing your students frequently to see where they are. If students have already mastered a skill, you might move on to the next lesson or unit.
