Description

This was created for my first grade team as an outline for our Light and Sound unit. This correlates with the new science standards for first grade, and consists of investigations each day that lead to students discovering properties and new information about light and sound. Each day begins with a question, then students are either presented with a demonstration, video, or materials to explore, and then introduced to new vocabulary words. The kit we used had "treasure boxes" filled with the following items: flashlight, small box with rubber bands on it (guitar), glow stick, candle, clicker, stethascope, cup with wax paper on the top of it (drum), mirror, magnifying glass, tuning fork, and bell. There are also other suggested materials such as foil, squares of wax paper, and black card stock, clear plastic cups, and paper cups to explore with light in the following lessons. There are also links to videos demonstrating other investigation with light and sound, as well as pictures of suggested read alouds that accompany the investigations and build upon students knowledge of light and sound. In addition, there are a few STEM activities, where students can create their own Kazoo, telephone, and shadow puppet using materials provided. Some of the vocabulary words used in this unit are: tuning fork, vibrate, energy, light wave, sound wave, transparent, translucent, opaque, reflect, evidence, and claim. I hope this helps you build upon your science units and have fun with light and sound!
