Description

In this fun lesson that integrates literacy and science, students read, play tag, and engage in the writing process. It's an excellent activity for the end of the year, outdoor education, Earth Day, or summer camp!

Students start by reading and discussing the fairy tale “Cat and Mouse in Partnership” or another selected text. Next, they participate in a tag game that simulates the food chain. Afterwards, they reflect on their learning and write in various modes, choosing from nine activities, including dialogue poems, animal fiction stories, newspaper editorials, informational essays, and play scripts. Students progress through the writing process using 6+1 traits, which focuses on ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation.

Students of many grade levels and abilities can enjoy this lesson. If needed, younger students can be paired with older students for the tag game. Use this activity to collaborate with English or science teachers or camp counselors. In fact, when I’m a camp instructor, this lesson is a favorite with my Young Writers!

This bundle includes the following:

  • Explicit lesson plan with the English Language Arts Common Core Anchor Standards
  • Grimm Brothers Fairy Tale text
  • tag game instructions
  • life, water & vegetation Cards
  • six animal and vocabulary cards (for ELL and special needs students),
  • writing menu handout
  • peer revision handout
  • rubric
  • student sample dialogue poem
