This novel study includes links to digital resources. Boom Learning is used for multiple-choice, short answer, and fill-in-the-blank questions such as comprehension questions and vocabulary practice.

Activities that require more open-ended responses may be found in Google Slides. This includes all the writing prompts with organizers for students to plan responses.

Compare and Contrast Essay Unit

1. Two Ways to Compare Topics

This lesson goes over two methods for writing compare-and-contrast essays:

  • Similarities and Differences
  • Point-by-Point Method

2. Writing a Thesis Statement

Three graphic organizers are provided that go over the rules for writing a thesis statement.

3. Writing an Introductory Paragraph

Two graphic organizers and two practice pages are provided to help students learn how to write an introductory paragraph to an essay.

4. Writing Body Paragraphs

The lesson included will model the first paragraph of the essay (comparing Robinson Crusoe to Scar Island) Students will then write the next two paragraphs independently.

This lesson also includes an organizer for using transitional words.

5. Writing the Conclusion

A graphic organizer is included going over the parts of a concluding paragraph.

6. Editing and Proofreading

This lesson contains four tools/checklists for students to check their final essays.
