"Ugly History: Witch Trials" sets the background information about witch trials in general: the definition of a witch, along with who is/was generally accused of witch craft and why. Students often need this background information before diving into the complexities of what happened in Salem. The graphic organizer helps them pull and sort the critical information from the fast-paced five-minute video. This can be used as sub plans or as whole class instruction where you pause and chat after each question/group of questions.

"What Really Happened During the Salem Witch Trials" gives an overview of what life was like in 1690s Salem, MA, what sparked the witch hunt, how the trials went down, and how it all finally ended. There is a ton of information so this organizer is double-sided so students can get it all down. This worksheet ends with the somewhat ambiguous question of if witch hunts can happen in present day which is a good lead-in to connecting with current witch hunts around the globe, McCarthyism with the Second Red Scare, or a class discussion about instances where groups of outsiders (people who do not fall into what many perceive as the norm) are blamed for something and unjustly persecuted because of it.
