What educators are saying

My students absolutely loved this activity. I made it into a competition to see who could achieve the cleanest water. The students kept asking to redesign their filters so that they could figure out how to make their water cleaner.
My students loved this challenge and really worked hard on creating different types of filters! It was fun to see their minds hard at work!

Description

Tap into your students’ creativity as they engineer, design and create water filters as part of a STEM unit on water pollution and primary sewage treatment discussing human impact on the environment. This follows the MS-ESS3-3 EARTH AND HUMAN ACTIVITY standards and the MS-ETS1-2 and MS-ETS1-3 ENGINEERING DESIGN standards. The challenge is for the students to use household materials to create layers in their water bottle filters to clean a batch of teacher created “dirty water”. Once they have had a classroom test challenge they go back and REDESIGN their filter.

Included are :

*Example photos of my students and their filters

*Teacher notes

*Student procedure sheet

*Student inventory of materials used

*Reflection questions

This is uploaded in a PowerPoint form so that you can send the slides to the students’ devices or print them out.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ESS3-3
Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment. Examples of the design process include examining human environmental impacts, assessing the kinds of solutions that are feasible, and designing and evaluating solutions that could reduce that impact. Examples of human impacts can include water usage (such as the withdrawal of water from streams and aquifers or the construction of dams and levees), land usage (such as urban development, agriculture, or the removal of wetlands), and pollution (such as of the air, water, or land).
NGSSMS-ETS1-3
Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
