Description

Great hands-on unit for students grades 3 – 5. Students will put themselves into the perspective of a Biomedical Engineer, design and build their own prosthetic hand.

There are 4 lesson plans included in this bundle.

  • Each lesson is about 50 minutes to an hour long.

This project includes the following:

  • 4 Full Lesson Plans with teacher’s notes, background information, and project instructions with visual aid.
  • Vocabulary flashcards
  • Materials List
  • Prosthetic Hand and Pylon Template

Week 1: Types of Prosthetics and Disabilities

  • Learn the different types of prosthetics. Discuss different disabilities through the loss of a particular sense.
  • Activity: What does it feel like feel through the mystery box
  • Engineering: Tape, score, and cut the prosthetic template.

Week 2: Anatomy of the Hand

  • Learn about the anatomy of a hand: Bones, Tendons, Joint, Nerves
  • Engineering: Create all the bones and fingertips for the prosthetic hand

Week 3: How the Finger Moves

  • Learn about dexterity and how our opposable thumbs help us grasp and grab things.
  • Engineering: Begin assembling the different parts of the prosthetic hand.

Week 4: Fitting a Prosthetic

  • Learn how a prosthetic arm is fitted onto a limb.
  • Engineering: Add the tendons and fit the levers into the student’s hand.
