Description

There is no other way to learn irregular words than to see them often enough that the letter pattern is in memory and can be retrieved easily. The way to get that memory there is through repetition. Some students won't need to see the word often, and others will need a lot. This is the easiest way to ensure that all students become fluent at their own rate, especially those who need more time and practice.

I call this format a worksheet/game, because it is both. It can be passed out as a worksheet with students in pairs. Each pair will need a six-sided die and pencils to play. Alternatively, you can laminate for independent play. Either way it will be a different game every time it is played with the throw of the die determining what happens next. This is the motivational element that means they will be having fun while seeing these words over and over. The more they play, the more fluent they become, regardless of ability.

I have included the Flash Cards because this is the type of thing I use for intervention prior to playing. The 'ci' component is in red. It levels the playing field and I sometimes time individual students when they are motivated to beat their best time. Every student I have taught wants to compete with themselves most days.

Please check the words I have used to ensure they are culturally linguistically appropriate:

precious, delicious, racial, musician, sufficient, magician, crucial, physician, sufficiency, specialist, suspicion, malicious, sociable, atrocious, ferocious, spacious, optician, gracious, official, commercial, efficient semiprecious, politician, deficient, technician, luscious, superficial, financial, beneficiary, inefficient, beautician, conscious, unconscious, electrician, artificial, unsociable, special, tactician, social, suspicious, facial, conscientious, specialist, semiconscious, mortician, conscience, beneficial, antisocial, vicious, ancient
