- Easel Assessment
Description
Three forms of assessment for your simple machines unit: a written test, a STEM group project, and a TPT Easel Assessment!
Printable Written Test
The 25-point test includes fill-in-the-blanks, labelling, multiple choice, and short-answer questions. An answer key is included.
STEM Challenge
The hands-on Design Challenge (STEM/STEAM/ADST activity) will have your students working collaboratively to design and build their own simple and compound machines out of recycled materials.
This Simple Machines STEM project includes:
- Teacher instructions
- Student instructions
- Rubrics (one that aligns with the British Columbian curriculum and one focused just on science and STEM)
- Student work pages (individual and group)
- Instructions for how to include an optional financial literacy component
Combining both of these assessments lets all students shine; even if their written component is lacking you can still assess them based on their creations and what they have shared orally and in drawings.
TPT Easel Assessment
Great for formative assessment, this 12-question, multiple-choice quiz is self-checking! Students can practice identifying simple machines pictured in the assessment.

BC Teachers: This resource was designed with the grade five science and ADST curriculum in mind, and the BC-specific rubric reflects that.
