    Urban Legend Task Cards:

    "The Lottery": Play and Socratic Seminar:

    ANALYZE GROUP CONFORMITY AND INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY WITH THE LOTTERY AND PERSONALITY THEORY! With Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" Unit, the full text is included in note-taker format. The play and Socratic Seminar engage students in relevant and meaningful discussion using Jung's personality theory. In this unit, students will:

    -Use teleplay to evaluate author's intention

    -Compile understanding of camera choices for everyday analysis of film technique

    -Perform a class play using "The Lottery" plot line

    -Evaluate the author's characterization and align it with modern personality theory

    -Collaborate in meaningful discussion of the themes, moral, and character actions in "The Lottery"

    This unit has been used in classrooms ranging from 6-11th grade and integrates multiple crucial Common Core Objectives. **Includes the story and all material, links, teacher tips necessary to implement the unit. In addition a recommended props list is included.

    "If Cornered, Scream" Reading Strategies:

    "The Open Window" Digital Escape Room:

    EXPLORE SAKI'S "THE OPEN WINDOW", A STORY OF TRICKERY; PERFECT FOR DURING THE HALLOWEEN SEASON. Mr. Nuttel has shown up at your house, claiming to be a lost relative that has never been mentioned. Armed with a fake letter from his sister, Lady Stapleton, he claims to need help curing his nerves. Little does he know that you have been writing Lady Stapleton since you were a child using secret codes. By the end off the day, can you keep Mr. Nuttle away?

    Students will work through four locks in this escape room, compare two video versions of the story, and answer a mastery test at the end while using the text. This escape room is common core aligned, student friendly, and requires minimal teacher preparation.

    Just give the students the URL, print out a student copy of the answer sheet, and let the fun begin. Providing the text for the story is optional, but an easy printing version of the text is included.

    Complete with teacher tips with answer explanations. Students will only need the supports in the website and no additional readings. Based on teacher preference, reading the short story can be completed during the escape room, or the escape room can be done after reading the short story "Open Window."

    The escape room has been tested on Mac, PC, and Google ChromeBook. Please check your District's firewall for use of YouTube and Google forms prior to purchasing this product.
