Specific ESL newcomer activities for use include:
1.First, give each Russian ESL newcomer a copy of the commonly spoken vocabulary lists. Then have each student identify vocabulary words they already know in English by highlighting or putting a checkmark next to those words. Find out how many of the words each student already knows in English. Do some students know all the words? Do some know only a few?
Now you can identify which students are absolute ESL beginners versus those who already have some knowledge of the English language. Plan your ESL newcomer activities and small groups based on this knowledge.
2.Find the cognates. Read the English vocabulary word slowly. Have the student quietly repeat the English word. Then have the student silently read the word in Russian. Ask the students which words on the English list sound similar to the word in Russian. Verify all cognates on the vocabulary list. Focus on these first because these are the easiest for students to learn.
3.Play a listening game. Give each student a copy of the commonly used English vocabulary list. In random order, say an English word from the list. Students scan the list and circle the word.
4.Play a speaking game. Using a round robin method, have each student pick a vocabulary word from the list and verbally use it in a sentence to the best of their ability.
For example, a beginner might say, “You the teacher” whereas an advanced student who selects the same word might say “You are the teacher.” Try not to focus on issues of non-standard speaking. In other words, don’t correct the beginner with “You are the teacher.” At this time it’s more important to get the students to “speak.” Correcting verbal errors too soon often causes students to stay in the silent period longer.
5.Use for spelling test. As the students learn the commonly spoken vocabulary words, they should also learn how to spell them. Keep the spelling tests short. Five words for beginners and no more than 10 words for intermediate/advanced.
