This wonderful book by Shannon Hitchcock tells a story about integration in the South. In the summer of 1969, Sarah’s six-year-old sister, Robin, has been seriously injured in a car accident. Sarah’s hiding a dreadful secret: the accident was her fault. She worries, too, about school integration in the fall, and what will it be like to have a black teacher? Will Sarah and her friend Ruby Lee, who is black, be able to stay friends? Then Sarah gets angry and calls Ruby Lee the “N” word – although it is never spoken in the novel— and Sarah has to do some soul searching to decide if she can find the courage to do what is right even though it isn’t easy.
