Description

Essential Question:  How are clockwise rotations and counterclockwise rotations related?

Objective:  Students will graph rotations in the coordinate plane and compare clockwise and counterclockwise rotations with a partner.

Activity: Students will each graph four rotations about the origin. Student A and Student B will compare their answers to discover how clockwise rotations are related to counterclockwise rotations. Each student will rotate figures both clockwise and counterclockwise as well as 180 degrees about the origin. They are asked to compare their work and reflect on the relationship.

This activity is intended to create a deeper understanding of rotations in the coordinate plane after a formal lesson. Consider assigning a video lesson for homework.

Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations:
Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.
Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
