Description

My kids LOVED this activity. This simulation goes along with Chapter 10 Section 2 in the Holt McDougal green world history textbook. In this simulation, students are assigned a role in the Roman republic. They are either members of the assembly, tribunes, magistrates, senators, or consuls. I assigned these randomly. Assembly members and tribunes sit at the same group, as well as magistrates and consuls. The senators sit in their own group. Each group has an assigned task based on what the members of the republic really did. First, they are introduced to their role and there are about 4-6 questions for each group. These questions ask what the responsibilities were of each group of people. Once they have completed this, they can begin actively "participating" in the Roman Republic. For example, Senators get to create laws. I had my students pick from topics I chose, but you can change this. Once they finish this, they pass these laws on to another group who have to approve them. I had students complete a graphic organizer on the Roman Republic when they finished doing their assigned task (not included). There are also signs included that I taped to the side of each groups desks to make it more realistic and so the students knew where they sat. This is a great way for students to get a realistic look at the members of the Roman Republic and what their responsibilities were.
