Roman House Powerpoint, Worksheet, and Performance Task

This is a powerpoint that teaches Latin students the basic appearance and room names of the Roman domus, along with the worksheet the students can fill out while going through the lesson, and a performance task for afterwards. This lesson is geared towards Latin I and assumes knowledge of 1st and 2nd Declension, ablative case, and some basic prepositions (in, ad, per, prope, etc). Many of the room names are neuter, so I use this lesson in my 2nd neuter unit. I put up the slide with the sentences, the class reads through what they say as a group, and then they guess which room it is. The back of the worksheet has sentences for students to fill in some words about the house and then translate into Latin.

You could scale this up or down for your students by changing the Latin sentences, the vocabulary, or else just putting the English there and making them guess the room names. All of the slides with Latin have the translation down in the notes. You could run this with a survey class as well if you replaced the Latin with English.

This lesson generally takes me 2 40-minute class periods to run, including giving some time to work on sentences. If you changed the sentences to English or scaled them down, you could probably run it in one period.

The performance task is for students to draw a floor plan of their own home, label it with the Roman room names, and write 5 sentences about their house in Latin, as if they were writing to a friend who lived far away.
