Challenger Accident Investigation Video Reflection Activity

    • This assignment is a Video Reflection of the NASA documentary detailing the events surrounding the loss of OV-099, Space Shuttle Challenger, shortly after the launch of the 25th flight of the Space Transportation System, Mission STS-51L, on 28 January, 1986, and the subsequent investigation into the loss of the vehicle and its crew of seven. The investigation shows that the Solid Rocket Booster field joints were of an insufficiently fault-tolerant design and when the vehicle was launched at below-normal temperatures, hot exhaust gasses leaked on ignition, damaging the integrity of the field joint, leading to a breach in the external tank and destruction of the orbiter.

Columbia Accident Investigation Video Reflection Activity

    • This assignment is a Video Reflection of the Space Shuttle Columbia accident. On February 1, 2003, it disintegrated over Texas and Louisiana during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in the death of all seven crew members. The video explains what caused this disaster.

Rocket Fundamentals & Manned Spacecraft Portfolio Reflective Journal assignment.

This is an assessment tool where the STUDENT picks how they want to show you they have mastery of the subject. Two pages long.

The students are given 13 different objectives they need to show mastery of. They do this by completing a project. They type is of their choice. These are some suggestions:

    • Make a collage
    • Comprise a song or rap
    • Construct a mobile
    • Make a poster
    • Assemble a scrap book
    • Traditional answer in writing (in a "project" form)
    • Other ideas you have (check with me first)

I give this type of assignment the very first day of the unit. It is my belief that the teacher needs to let the students know exactly what they are expected to know by the time the unit is over. This also gives them time to work on their project.

This assignment can be an additional assessment for students or the main assessment used.
