Rhetorical Devices: Jonathan Edward's "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"

This lesson uses excerpts from Edward's sermon to address author's purpose, audience, the effects of metaphors and similes, and tone. Students are asked questions that rely on both textual evidence and inferences. The lesson culminates with students choosing an excerpt for creative expression. Serves as a great transition in the American Literature classroom between Early Colonial/Puritan influence to Rationalism/Rhetoric or as a spotlight on the power of pathos. Can be used with all levels of learners.
