Description

Studying rhetoric not only enhances communication skills but also fosters critical thinking, persuasion abilities, and social awareness, making it a valuable pursuit in both academic and practical contexts.

In this set of resources students read the classic Gettysburg Address as well as two paired speeches. One from Mohammed Ali on his opposition and response to refusing the draft as well the the fictionalized (but based on true events) Gettysburg speech from Disney’s Remember the Titans. Students study the speaker, purpose, audience, rhetorical appeals and strategies and present them in a written rhetorical precis (summary).

The lessons culminate in a comparison on how the speakers expressed their beliefs and values.
