What educators are saying

Getting students to slow down and actually think about revision is tough. This was a good step in getting it done. Thank you.

Description

Looking for a meaningful way to wrap up your argumentative writing unit? With this resource, you can help students revise their rough drafts and evaluate example research papers to reflect upon their own areas for improvement.

RESOURCE CONTENTS:

  1. REVISION ACTIVITY: An editable Google Slides file with revising and editing points for when students have a rough draft completed.
  2. EXAMPLE ESSAYS: Three editable example essays for argumentative research papers that you can use to lead students through a final evaluation of their own essay. Assessing strengths and weaknesses in the examples will help remind students of what they need to adjust in their own research paper.
  3. EDITABLE GRADING RUBRIC: An editable Google Docs rubric for students' finished essays, which is easy to use and modify.
  4. EDITABLE REVISION RUBRIC: A rubric to help manage the essay revision process realistically.
  5. CHECKLIST: A checklist to help students work through the revision activity.
  6. SUGGESTED USE: Suggested use notes for teacher, including ideas for facilitating the revision activity.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

I recommend these materials for high school or junior high students, mainly because the vocabulary is high in two of the three the example essays. Since they are editable, however, you can adjust their readability.

The example essays and rubric can also be used at the outset of an argumentative writing unit to help students understand the teacher's expectations.

TIME FRAME:

This revision activity and evaluation of example essays has a flexible time frame. You could spend anywhere between one class period to one whole week working through the revision and editing process with a rough draft, depending on your goals for student writing.

FORMAT:

When you download the resource, you will have one PDF file. Open that file, and read through the suggested use to find all of the Google Drive links. Resources are either Google Slides or Google Docs. If you prefer to use Microsoft format, you can download the Google Drive files as PowerPoints, Docs, and PDFs. All of the resources included in this file are editable.

THIS RESOURCE IS ALSO INCLUDED IN A LARGER ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING BUNDLE FOR GRADES 7-12.
