Description

This packet aims at making the difficult topic of war and Veterans day accessible for elementary students. It contains two days of no prep, cross-curricular learning for first and second Grade around the topic of World War I, conflict and Veterans Day (Remembrance Day or Armistice Day), starting from the fabulous book “Why?” by Nikolai Popov. It is the perfect sub plan and is also great if you want to get out of the routine and boost student engagement.

The packet includes:

· 9 cross-curricular lesson plans aligned with Common Core Standards with fillable fields for personal details. The lessons are:

Book study: cause and effect and text-to-self connections

Character education: conflict resolution

Writing: re-writing the story by changing the events of the story

Social Studies: How World War I started

Reading: Informational text about World War I

Math: Mystery picture: addition (and subtraction) of 2-digit numbers

Poetry: Remembrance / Veterans day poem

Art: make a paper poppy
