Not sure how to set up reciprocal reading in your classroom?
- Start by explicitly teaching each skill with modelled reading.
- After modelling the skills using think alouds, invite students to contribute to discussions e.g. making predictions, asking questions, clarifying.
- Provide opportunities for students to practise the skills in a whole class session (each with a text, focus explicitly on one skill).
- Incorporate practise into literacy groups (i.e. using the task cards)
- Once all skills are explicitly taught, and students have had ample practise of each skill, the 'reciprocal reading' group process can be taught.
- Make links between the skills e.g. predicting encourages readers to monitor their reading more actively, questioning and clarifying helps to make sense of the text so you can summarise.
- Choose 4 of your capable students to take on a role, using the role cards, interactive book mark and recording sheet, guide them through the process and prompt each student for when it is their turn to contribute. Allow the class to see how the reciprocal reading process works!
- Group your students and provide them each with a 'pack' (like pictured), and have them work through the process whilst you roam and give them feedback!
- Continue practising this process until students become confident in understanding the 'comprehension skills' and how to apply them, before removing the written component and complete it as an oral activity!
- Practise RR groups with different texts types or apply the skills to other subjects when reading texts as a whole class too!
