Description

The largest confusion about getting higher education online is the difference between degrees, diplomas, and certificates. This is quite understandable being that sometimes the terms are often interchangeable. What we are going to attempt to do with this article is to define each term and tell why each is advantageous to particular studies.

• A degree is a title that is awarded by an institute of higher learning after successfully completing a particular course of study. They type of degree one receives relates to how long one attends courses and how in depth those courses are. To receive an Associate’s Degree, one usually spends about two years studying their major’s requirements. Bachelor’s Degrees tend to take four years to obtain. While Master’s and Doctorate Degrees take longer.

Obtaining a degree is advantageous due to the fact that not only does a person receive specialized learning, they also receive a review apps and a broader knowledge base. A person with a degree tends to earn more and is more highly sought after by employers.

• Diplomas and certificates are virtually the same. Some institutions prefer one term as opposed to the other. A diploma or a certificate is an indicator that a person has completed a number of courses in a specific field of study and has reached a certain level of knowledge. Each learning institution has their own standards for obtaining different diplomas or certificates in a specific area of study.

The advantage of receiving a diploma or certificate is that the length of time to receive them is generally shorter than degrees. Diplomas and certificate programs are focused primarily on practical application as opposed to the how and whys of the study. Entrance into programs that offer diplomas or certificates is less strict than those programs offering degrees. These types of programs are good for persons who seek training in a job specific area. The cost is also significantly lower than the costs to obtain a degree.

The choice of obtaining a degree or a certificate is purely a personal one. One must take into consideration the field of employment that they are seeking. Can one obtain a certificate and still have the knowledge needed to perform the job? Is practical training more important than learning about the background of the career field?

A person entering the field of computers would probably benefit more from a program that offers hands on learning and training, while someone entering the legal field, such as a paralegal, would better benefit by learning a broader range of background material as well as learning of law specific material.

There are many, many programs available on the internet that will support which program is best for you. Take your time and consider all of the pros and cons to determine exactly what it is that you want to accomplish.
