Description
The students will practice theme, text features, comparing and contrasting, main idea, context clues, inferencing and writing with character traits in this ENGAGING Valentine's Day challenge. The students will go through a series of six challenges. They will have a broken heart and each challenge will earn them a piece of tape to fix the heart. At the end they will have a heart and earn a reward of your choice!
Each challenge has a reading or writing component to it.
Challenge 1:
Read a fiction piece about love and identify the theme in the passage. They will have to also identify three different pieces of proof of the theme.
Challenge 2:
Read a nonfiction piece about Valentines Day and identify the text features used, analyze the text features, and create their own text feature.
Challenge 3:
Read two different stories about Valentines Day and compare and contrast the two, while identifying the main idea.
Challenge 4:.
Complete an inferencing investigation by reading different people’s account of a situation.
Challenge 5::
They have to use context clues in order to solve a riddle.
Challenge 6::
Write your own story about Valentines Day with a given theme, characters, and character traits.
There is a phonics version now added to this product for easy differentiation ! You can also use this version for 1st and 2nd graders!
After completing the challenge they earn their tape and go to the next. The challenges are checked by you (answer key provided). They do not have to do the challenges in order. When they are done I set up a special Valentine's Day spot with books, Valentine's Day games, and candy!
This is a great one or two day challenge that is fun and engaging to students while being rigorous and practices many skills that students need!
