Description

Superhero Decoding Strategies

Primary Reading Unit

I developed this unit for my kindergarten readers. We needed to connect with our super powers to learn decoding strategies with play and fun. My students were engaged and on the edge of their seats while learning how to tackle unknown words and build meaning while they are reading. I was able to transfer the responsibility of choosing a strategy on to them by saying, “Use your super powers!” My students connected and then applied their knowledge in their reading.

Most importantly I also included teaching points and common core standards to aline with each strategy.

This product includes:

***Teaching Points with “I can” statements

***Common Core Standards with each strategy

***End of Unit Celebration

***How -To Make Capes: Step by step instructions with photos and template

***Parent letters to introduce the unit and gather materials for the capes

***Letters from Reader-Man(7- 1 for each strategy) 2 sets *colorful and printer friendly. These letters introduce the strategy as well as launch the lesson each day.

***Super power strategy posters. Color classroom posters for anchor charts and classroom display

***Reflections/Rubrics poster and student reflections: Poster size is great for whole class quick glance assessments. The students can use their reflections to reflect on their learning for the day.

{Updated Oct. 2017 - with additional posters. Giving students a picture clue and example on each strategy poster}
