Reading Comprehension and Retell Tool K-2 CCSS Aligned

For students who demonstrate: language delays, auditory processing difficulties, english as a second language, attention deficits, resistence to structured tasks, anxiety about the amount of work expected of them -- and for students with an autism spectrum disorder who have trouble learning due to deficits in communication, attention and self-regulation skills.

These visual tools (icons and graphic organizers) attempt to provide visual cues and tactile interaction for all the verbal prompts and messages/questions you need as you work on the Kindergarten CC standards in Reading Comprehension. For so many students, verbal language is the main barrier to learning and they need another access point. Also, visual memory has shown to be much stronger in many students with learning and attention issues.

These visuals help them SEE the information as you present it. It is a teaching tool to support students with learning difficulties and can eventually be faded out as they grasp new concepts and retain the information you have targeted.

This tool also provides opportunities for tactile feedback, movement (by removing a question card or concept from a velcro board) and choices (let them choose a 'skill' to practice -- necessary for some students that need or desire choices, interaction and a concrete plan related to WHAT is expected of them, for how long, and how much (e.g., This is how many questions I will ask you. OR Today we will practice 5 WHEN questions and 5 WHERE questions).

Use for small group or individual Read Aloud, Guided Reading or Independent Reading activities. Can be adult-directed (by a TA, Teacher or Para) or set out on work station to prompt students or narrow their focus during independent reading time.

Includes 23 Pages:

Page 1: Story Retell Board- to show students the 'Big Picture' and how that big picture breaks down. Practice stating the title, author, illustrator and also shows students that we will help them identify the characters, setting and main events. A box is also placed so you can show - or preview with your students - specific question forms you will focus on. Suggest printing on card stock, laminating and then adding velcro dots (about 5) to the question box. OR, place questions on a separate velcro board.

2 Pages for Comprehension questions. Both full questions, and question words (who, what, where, etc.) to support your students' understanding and processing of specific question forms. Some later questions have student response sentence starters. 11 cells are blank for new questions you can write as you go.

2 Page Prompts for Vocabulary (new words) that can be part of all of a guided reading focus. Also, prompts for: stating synonyms, antonyms, category, first/last sound of words.

Graphic Organizer 'When does this story take place? with visual for temporal concepts.

2 Pages of Feeling Words, 32 pics total to allow you to talk about how characters feel during a story.

Graphic Organizer- 'Character Feelings Can Change!' with more feeling visuals to you can talk about this concept.

2 Pages with Icons for Setting, that you can teach the concept of Setting, or match with a particular story you read, 32 total. Leave as a whole page or cut up for separate pics (or both! Just print out 2 copies!)

One Page: Question Scripts for students to read and memorize so they can learn how to ask about the story. For students with low output or off-topic comments, practice a few at a time and gradually increase.

Two Pages Comment Scripts for student to read and memorize. Great for a small group.

One Page Blank Cells to write your own questions or comments that align to your specific reading or listening activity.

Two Pages Sentence Starters that address giving an opinion during or after stories. One blank page to individualize.

Six Pages for Writing Responses that focus on Opinion Giving and Drawing Illustrations that match the response. Each one is differentiated a bit (more/less writing, more/less drawing space, with/without icons).
