Description

This step by step, discussion driven, no-prep notes and practice set that covers converting between rational and radical form is a great way to teach & introduce numerical expressions with rational exponents to your students. The first page of the notes is more instructional and goes over how to convert between the two forms while reinforcing simplifying radicals with 8 examples to discuss together.  The second page can be used as independent practice or as guided practice, where students work independently, with a partner or within a small group. This set’s practice has 18 scaffolded problems.  Students and teachers love how easy these notes are to follow and understand.

These notes give a very structured procedural approach to rewriting equivalent expressions with rational exponents.  The practice problems included are scaffolded so that they begin at more of an entry level difficulty and then progress into a deeper complexity to encourage problem solving and “productive struggle”.

Interpret parts of an expression, such as terms, factors, and coefficients.
Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.
Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions. For example the expression 1.15 to the 𝘵 power can be rewritten as ((1.15 to the 1/12 power) to the 12𝘵 power) is approximately equal to (1.012 to the 12𝘵 power) to reveal the approximate equivalent monthly interest rate if the annual rate is 15%.
