Description

This resource includes a two page informational text about the three men who lived on Pine Street (renamed Valour Road), Winnipeg before the beginning of WWI (Leo Clarke, Fred Hall, and Robert Shankland) and who were all awarded the Victoria Cross medal. Only Shankland survived the war. This is a great resource to use around Remembrance Day but can actually be used at any time of year, as there is no direct reference to November 11th.

Accompanying the text is a page of vocabulary and language use activities and a page of comprehension questions. At the bottom of the latter page is a short research assignment; students will need access to the internet. I have included the easiest website for them to use (on the answer key page) and the best search term to use to find it themselves.

Also included is a page of 8 discussion or writing topics that can be assigned as group discussion or writing topics. Some of these or all of them might be best assigned after the reading - they can be cut up into strips to distribute among students or used as a complete page (perhaps allowing students to choose a number of topics). It can be used as an assessment tool or simply as a way to observe Remembrance Day in your classroom. Please note that the preview does not include all of the topics available in the purchased item.

An answer key is included.
