Description

Recommendations for successful parent-child communication.

Communication is one the most important aspects of interpersonal relationships and it is a key feature to understanding the nature and the dynamic of the family relations. In order for the communication to be successful there should be uninterrupted flow of information among the participants in the communication. Successful communication enables better understanding and integration in the decision making processes, makes it easier to embrace the rules and the expectations regarding the different roles the children take on as they grow old within the family and outside it. It is difficult to achieve successful parent-child relationship without having successful communication.

Successful communication is when we receive and send clear messages, dialogue, ME-speech, active listening skills, empathy, tolerance, mutual respect, and respecting the differences for all the participants in the process of communication. Successful communication with family improves the child’s social skills, boosts his/her self-esteem and the feeling of fulfillment, and contributes to learning and practicing the different forms of social support.

Unsuccessful communication includes sending and receiving unclear and confusing messages, messages that have very little support and a lot of criticism. Unsuccessful communication brings to misunderstandings, wrong interpretations of what has been said, discrimination, and conflicting situations in the family, as well as other social contexts.
