Guided Learning

1. Begin by having an exciting discussion about how you are pretending to reward them based on their outstanding performance in the business world, so therefore you will be taking them on a cruise for 1 week to the Caribbean.

2. Provide a story about how everyone is having so much fun on the cruise ship laughing and enjoying their time relaxing.

3. Then all of a sudden there was a big BANG and the cruise ship hit a large rock in the water. Everyone had to jump in the water because the ship was sinking. As everyone was swimming in the water, they looked around to see if there was an island close by. Yes, there was, and it was about ¼ of a mile away. They saw a lot of items that were in floating in the water including; chickens, pigs, cows, goats and dogs, fruits, vegetables, suitcases, towels, barrels, etc. and before they could swim to the island, they must start to choose items to take with them to survive.

4. Then surprise, they saw sharks in a distance and realized they had to use their time wisely by quickly choosing items in the water that were beneficial to their survival. Time management plays a huge role in everyday life and this is one extreme example, but important to always be cognizant of time and understand that it’s not easy.

5. Use high voice inflections and excitement to let the students know this is going to be a fun and productive project, plus it provides an interest in students wanting to complete the assignment.

6. Hand out the 4 rubrics and explain each one thoroughly.

  • Time Management Desert Island Team List Rubric
  • Time Management Team Posters Rubric
  • Time Management Desert Island Team Presentation Script Rubric
  • Time Management Desert Island Team Presentation Rubric
  • Team Presentation For Teacher Assessment Rubric (This is the same as the above team presentation rubric, but the teacher must ensure he/she has is during the presentations in order to grade the students presenting)
  • Desert Island Presentation Observation Form

7. Then, place the students in groups of 3 so they can begin their group project.

Independent Practice

Students will begin introducing themselves to their group and reviewing the rubrics while thinking and preparing for assignment ideas.

Walk around the room and ensure students are on task and working well with their group.

Make sure you communicate that they must get along with their group member to accomplish the task that is being asked by their boss. In the business world there is no time to waste and they must work together to get the job done regardless. (pretend you are in a business workplace, so they understand the importance of working together effectively)

Synthesis

Students will share their reflections with their group, discussing their obligations, requirements, and their general practices of time management for the project.

Formative Assessment

· Why is time management important in the Desert Island Items scenario?

· Why do you feel you have to work cohesively in a group?

· What was your key to success in completing the assigned project?
