Description

This high interest Readers’ Theater whodunit mystery script activity will give your grades 5-8 students drama and ELA fun! Students will practice reading aloud, comprehension, and reflect on elements of drama using a drama elements anchor chart. Questions and a multiple choice quiz are included.
"The Mystery of the Crooked Competition" readers’ theater script will require students to perform inference tasks to solve clues. Transform your ELA and drama students into 'whodunit' detectives! This 9 page script is designed for 11 readers, but the number of readers can easily be contracted or expanded depending on how many groups you wish to have. Question sheets and answers are included.

PLOT
This funny and engaging story is about a Netflix cooking competition in a cold January in New York where someone (no spoilers!) heats up the action by trying to cheat their way to success. If not for the script’s 12 year old 'detective' twins, they would have succeeded and their aunt, celebrity chef Dee Licious, would have been defeated.

STUDENT TASKS
-- Students read their individual part aloud.

-- The class has to work out the crooked person’s identity and the four clues that revealed this on their answer sheet BEFORE going on to read the final page of the script where the solution is revealed.
-- To end the script, students first discuss and then write on six short response questions.
-- Students complete a journal entry in paragraph form.
-- They then answer 8 questions about how elements of drama apply to the script. Definitions of 25 drama elements are included.

-- They take a quick multiple choice quiz to check for full understanding and recall.

-- Extra chuckles are provided by mix and match food riddles. The answers to food jokes have been separated from the questions and need to be reunited!
