What educators are saying

I'm using this as a continuation of the original resource with the videos. This is wonderful for older SPED students. The examples are clear and step by step. I like that I can use each article for just Restate Answer or Restate Answer Cite Explain.
My students enjoyed this resource. This was a great way to review all that was taught on the topic. I wish I could give it 6 stars! The videos that go with it are amazing. Thank you!

Description

Print and Digital! This RACE (or RACES) writing strategy resource provides practice for written responses to text dependent questions! The RACE(S) strategy is an acronym (Restate question, Answer the question, Cite text evidence, Explain the evidence, and optional Sum it up) that helps students structure their response to a question in a thoughtful, organized way that draws from the text.

This resource includes 36 passages (half fiction, half nonfiction) with a text-dependent question (a variety of question types are used). Because it is more effective to gradually build the strategy (first the R and A parts, then R, A, and C, then R, A, C, and E, and then optional R, A, C, E, and S), each passage comes with four different checklists at the bottom (RA, RAC, RACE, RACES) to meet your students where they are and to help them remember to include these parts in their written response. All the reading passages with the different checklists also have two options for writing lines: handwriting lines and regular lines so that you can choose which suits your students best.

These passages are fun because they are seasonal and some holiday-related, to add a bit more interest! There are 4 passages for each month (Sept-May) or in other words, 12 passages for each season (fall-spring). Some passages/topics are not hard-core seasonal/holiday-related and can be pulled out and used anytime (for example: the worms passage found in March, the kite flying story in April).

Answer keys are included for all passages (to use as a guide). There are also blank lined pages included to print on the back side of the passages. Please take a look at the preview for a closer glimpse!

Purchasing this resource will enable you to download the traditional PDF version to be printed as well as have access to a digital version to be used with Google Classroom™ or any LMS (through TpT's digital tool, Easel)! I have already prepared a student digital version of this resource for your convenience (deleted answer keys, added instructions and text boxes for student answers, etc.). But you can also make your own changes (in terms of text boxes, instructions, etc., but note the content of the pages is not editable). For more information about how TpT's digital tool Easel works, please click here! Also check out the preview above for a glimpse of this digital version!

This resource is listed as 2nd-3rd grade, but this can be flexible. It would work well for upper elementary students who are struggling with this and just need more practice.

This product includes the following:

- 36 passages with a text dependent question (a variety of question types used), each passage with 4 different checklists (RA, RAC, RACE, RACES) and 2 different writing line types as explained above

- Answer keys for all passages

- Blank lined pages for the back sides of passages

Have you seen my free student instructional video series that teaches our kids how to use the RACE Writing Strategy?

There are 11 videos in the series [Lesson 11 (S for Sum It Up) is optional], and I teach the strategy one step at a time with student independent practice in between some of the video sessions. The practice pages and materials needed are included in my original RACE(S) Writing Strategy Resource for 2nd-3rd (print and digital), and you can check out that resource HERE! To get a glimpse into the free video series, see my informational video HERE.

Check out my Paired Passages Using the RACE(S) Writing Strategy, which is a great next step: comparing and contrasting two texts! See that HERE! Also has free instructional videos!

If you’re looking for a RACE resource geared toward K-1st grade, check that out HERE!
