Description

"WHY do I need to know it? WHERE did it come from? HOW can I remember it? Why can't math be more fun? WHEN can I use it?"

The quadratic formula is practically a rite of passage in high school mathematics, and possibly the most famous formula ever taught! This rap and the accompanying worksheets will break it all down and leave you groovin' to "math on beat". It guides students through the process of completing the square for the general standard form equation, then isolating x to arrive at the quadratic formula.

CURRICULUM CONNECTION
Ontario Secondary School Curriculum:

Grade 10 Academic, Quadratic Relations of the Form y=ax² + bx + c, Solving Quadratic Equations (MPM2D: QR3.7 & QR3.8)

QR3.7 – explore the algebraic development of the quadratic formula
(e.g., given the algebraic development, connect the steps to a numerical example; follow a demonstration of the algebraic development [student reproduction of the development of the general case is not required])
QR3.8 – solve quadratic equations that have real roots, using a variety of methods
(i.e., factoring, using the quadratic formula, graphing)

Grade 11 Functions and Applications, Quadratic Functions, Solving Quadratic Equations
(MCF3M, QF1.1.6)

QF1.1.6 – explore the algebraic development of the quadratic formula
(e.g., given the algebraic development, connect the steps to a numeric example; follow a demonstration of the algebraic development, with technology, such as computer algebra systems, or without technology [student reproduction of the development of the general case is not required])...

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:
High School Algebra, Reasoning with Equations & Inequalities, Solve quadratic in one variable. (HSA.REI.B.4)
Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation in x into an equation of the form (x - p)² = q that has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from this form.
