Description

This is a complete PowerPoint lesson with multimedia resources and two student worksheets. This lesson covers the main purposes of apostrophes and gives specific examples. Topics include:

  • Possession / possessive nouns
  • Singular and plural nouns
  • Irregular plural nouns
  • Contractions
  • It's (contraction) versus its (possessive)
  • Possessive pronouns (ours, yours, its, theirs, his, hers, whose)
  • Common mistakes & exceptions (verbs, single letter plurals)

The PowerPoint lesson includes brief student tasks and checks for understanding such as multiple choice questions, rewriting sentences, and a Think-Pair-Share discussion question.

The worksheet includes a page for students to write three sentences using apostrophes, and two pages with sentences that need to be corrected by inserting apostrophes where needed based on context.

This lesson can be completed either in-person or virtually.
