We use problem solving skills in every aspect of our lives. We have to identify our problem, gather our information, come up with potential solutions, plan out a strategy of implementation, and then check to see if our solution makes sense. If we want our students to think and to come up with solutions themselves, we have to implement problem solving skills as part of our lessons.

If we develop our students’ problem solving skills, we will be able to get them to think critically and discover concepts on their own instead of memorizing steps and formulas which they will forget anyway.

Included in this pack:
The Path to Problem Solving – your students can follow the path to get them on their way to thinking about the problem, all the while contemplating the reasonableness of their answers.

Problem Solving Strategies – different methods to help your students when they are struggling with a problem. You can discuss which strategies work best for each problem, and which strategies work best for each student.

The Plan for Problem Solving – the path to problem solving laid out in a template for your students to follow and fill in. You can use this template in a dry-erase sleeve over and over again! We used these in my classroom at least once a week and my students loved being able to easily erase their work if they had to try again.

The Path, Strategies, and Plan are designed to be printed back to back. This resource folds nicely into a booklet and can be used in interactive notebooks and with dry erase sleeves (ex: Communicators or Smart Pals).

Problem Solving Posters – a list of the strategies and a list of ways to become a successful problem solver to post on your bulletin board as a visual aid for when your students are stuck and need some help!


The Path to Problem Solving Full Page Poster – You can use this as a poster on your wall, or as a reference sheet for your students to put in their folders or binders. You can also enlarge the poster to provide your students with a larger visual aid.

Bulletin Board Set – Print out individual posters for each step to display on your bulletin board. Make your own path or use the arrows provided in the set. You can cut the arrows to the length you need. Decorate your display with the included Math Doodles!

”Successful Problem Solvers…” Poster – List of the habits of successful problem solvers. Practice these habits and ways of thinking with your students to help them preserve in solving problems.

Bookmarks – The Path to Problem Solving in the form of a bookmark. Print them on cardstock to provide your students with a reusable resource or have them glue the bookmark into their interactive notebooks.
