Description

The Probability of Independent and Dependent guided notes discuss independent and dependent events with examples and calculating probability of two independent or dependent events both happening. These notes were made for a high school geometry level course, but could be used to in statistics or an honors middle school level course. The scaffolded notes provide an extra opportunity to keep students engaged and provide them with valuable connections between different concepts in Geometry. Key vocabulary and multiple examples are included in the two pages of notes. The notes also come with two answer key for the notes (one with just the notes part that can be projected for teaching use and the other with notes and examples filled in). The worksheet included has one page of questions covering probabilities of independent and dependent events. A full answer key to the worksheet is provided.

Also included in the zip folder is an mp4 video file recording of the lesson. This is a zoom recording of my screen as I teach through the lesson notes. All audio and worked out examples are included within the video. This would be a great resource for an online class, a flipped classroom, while you have a sub, or just as a re-teaching resource for students to use.

Understand that two events 𝘈 and 𝘉 are independent if the probability of 𝘈 and 𝘉 occurring together is the product of their probabilities, and use this characterization to determine if they are independent.
Understand the conditional probability of 𝘈 given 𝘉 as 𝘗(𝘈 and 𝘉)/𝘗(𝘉), and interpret independence of 𝘈 and 𝘉 as saying that the conditional probability of 𝘈 given 𝘉 is the same as the probability of 𝘈, and the conditional probability of 𝘉 given 𝘈 is the same as the probability of 𝘉.
Recognize and explain the concepts of conditional probability and independence in everyday language and everyday situations. For example, compare the chance of having lung cancer if you are a smoker with the chance of being a smoker if you have lung cancer.
Find the conditional probability of 𝘈 given 𝘉 as the fraction of 𝘉’s outcomes that also belong to 𝘈, and interpret the answer in terms of the model.
Apply the general Multiplication Rule in a uniform probability model, 𝘗(𝘈 and 𝘉) = 𝘗(𝘈)𝘗(𝘉|𝘈) = 𝘗(𝘉)𝘗(𝘈|𝘉), and interpret the answer in terms of the model.
